World of Warcraft is Alive in Colorado (I Suppose)

(If you don’t play WoW, you can skip right over this post, haha.)

Warlock Fun
I have spent the last month focused on my long-abandoned 80 Undead lock. He’s my first and only 80, yet I cast him aside in early 2009 to level some alts and recede from the game a bit as I became more involved in local community antics. In my absence, my sister (rogue) and brother-in-law (DK, mage) got their toons to 80 and well geared, doing all the cool stuff that you can do at that level.

So they were over the moon when my warlock came roaring back in December, coinciding with Patch 3.3, whose LFG overhaul led me on an emblem binge, resulting in my current 2600+ gear score (acc. to Wow-Heroes).

So I’ve been running random heroics each night, learning my class better and steadily rising in the meters. My best DPS so far has been a solid 5400 in Heroic Trial of the Champion. Nothing amazing, I know, but I’m delighted to have progressed so far after having been gone for close to a year. Before I returned last month, I had never run a Heroic. In fact, I had only run a handful of dungeons in the game, mostly the Hellfire Citadel ones. And now I’ve run every single WotLK instance on Heroic.

(My fave? Culling of Stratholme for the dialogue. Or Halls of Reflection because it’s the most challenging thing I’ve done in the game so far.)

Paladin Fun
Before I resumed lock duties in December, I quickly leveled a Draenei paladin to 76 on a different server in the months before. My goal was to use him as a tank and healer upon hitting 80, but I have done neither. In truth, I have never tanked or healed a dungeon with him. I confess to being intimidated by the expectations those roles command of me. With that in mind, I haven’t played him since early December, though I have two really good friends on that server who are probably very annoyed that I haven’t logged on in a while.

So I plan on returning to my pally and at least getting him to 80 soon. From that point forward, it’s a matter of running regular dungeons to get used to tanking or healing before moving into heroics. Having run all the 80 heroics on my lock, I will at least know how the fights go. But doing caster DPS is markedly different from what’s expected as a tank or healer.

So I expect to suck. A lot.

The last time I healed a dungeon was on my 66 priest (Ramps), and I dropped group after wiping 6 times in a row. I was convinced I was the reason, though it could have just been a bad group. Wiping so many times on the same fight (the dragon at the end) is discouraging – especially when you’re the healer – so it wrecked my confidence, and I haven’t played that toon in months.

So that’s pretty much it. I’m loving my warlock and the opportunity to spend more time with my sister and brother-in-law. We often queue up for LFG together (though it takes FOREVER to find a group when you’re queued as DPS triplets) and have a blast racing for the top of the DPS meters.

Zug-zug.

(If you don’t play WoW, but you read all of that – thanks. It’s a supra-nerdy thing to write about, but I love it immensely. I’ve thought about starting a separate WoW blog to indulge all this madness. We’ll see.)

Hey Ef,

Got a quick question for you. If another game came along that was better than WoW, would you jump on it or would you stick with WoW? I guess I am asking if you're addicted to WoW or to the genre? I have picked up WoW at various time and usually play for about 3 months and then get tired of it. There is always something missing for me, but I know I like the genre. I generally try every new MMO that comes out either in closed or open beta. So far, nothing has been 'it'. So is WoW 'it' for you or is it just the best that you've played?

Also, I don't mind that you've got WoW stuff in your feed here. I mean, it's part of who you are, why shuttle it off somewhere else?

Joe,

WoW is the only MMO I've ever played and seems to have the most far-reaching community/culture behind it. For that reason, I don't know if I could easily leave it for another title. That said, I'm certainly excited by some of the new ones in development (the Star Wars one, for example).

It doesn't help that I've got family who play on the same server that I do. If anything, sometimes it's just an excuse to chat. They live in a different state, and I only see them once a year. WoW bridges that but also provides a context.

Yeah, I can definitely see that. I interviewed at a company making an MMO (soon to be released!) and one of the things I stressed to them was that I'd like to see games have more of an option to 'chat only'. Want to just go sit in Goldshire Inn and chat with a friend? Well then you shouldn't have to pay anything. I see that sort of thing becoming more popular in future games. It's not just a game, it's a destination.

The community thing is something that I think will change eventually and I am not sure if it'll be a slow change or an extremely quick one. I am really interested in Star Wars as well. If it turns out to be awesome, do people just drop WoW? Based on the amount of people still playing Everquest, I'd guess not, but who knows.

Baw,

So happy to hear about your escapades into the world. Of Warcraft. I haven't had the opportunity to play a ton lately but I hear you in regards to your emblem bagging stint. I'm a little jealous you've done halls of reflection, I have to admit. I haven't gone in there yet because I'm a healer and FoS and PoS are both wretched wretched places as a healer. And then people tell me that HoR is worse. Ugh - want to go, and don't want to go.

Also, I wish I could play with you but aren't you horde scum on your lock? ;)

Thanks for the update!

Ronnie

Joe,

That's an intriguing option. To potentially populate virtual worlds with people who just want to socialize instead of playing the game. I confess that WoW content for casual socializing is pretty scant. Outside of Trade Chat and Party Chat, there aren't many cues for socializing.

That said, would I hang out at Inns to chat with people? Honestly, yes. There are times where I would love to sit down and chat with people about the game but have few IRL friends who indulge that. So having a place to do it in-game (because let's admit it, Trade Chat is a wasteland) would be incredible.

Ronnie,

Yeah, I'm Horde scum on my lock. Sorry!

HoR is crazy. I've never had a clean run - we've always wiped at least 3 times before we get it right. Oddly, the easiest part of the run is the Arthas chase. You'd think that anything with that chap involved would be immensely hard, but he's a breeze compared to his two initial cronies.

Sooooo glad I get to write about this, hahaha.

I assume, of course, you'll be ditching WoW for All Points Bulletin? Bubblegoose would make a great Criminal.

Correct answer = yes!
